The guide
Start here
Uncle Stock screens companies on what they earn, own and owe — and shows you the calculation behind every number it prints. This guide teaches it in nine short lessons, one task each.
1Five minutes, three moves
If you do nothing else today, do these three. Each one takes about a minute and each one is the doorway to a whole lesson.
-
See one company
Type a ticker or a company name in the search box at the top left. Pick it from the list. The row lands on your White board; click it and the company opens below.
Open the screener -
Understand one number
Click any value in the table. You land on that metric with its years side by side. Hover a cell and Uncle Stock shows you the calculation it ran to get there.
Open a stock -
Screen the market
Click ⚙ Screen stocks. Choose something to sort on, add one condition, press Search. That is a screen — the rest is refinement.
Build a screen
2What you need an account for
Most of Uncle Stock is open. You can look up any company and read its figures without signing in — three companies a day in full, after which values lock. An account lifts that, and the paid packs below add the parts that cost real computing.
| Pack | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Bronze | Screen the market, use saved and shared screens, keep one stock list. |
| Silver | Save your own screens, backtest them, one personal column set, the interactive chart, flexible Should conditions, multi-metric sorting, re-import a company's source data. |
| Gold | Compare against industry medians, export to csv, several stock lists and several column sets, positions, alerts and portfolio return. |
3The nine lessons
- LESSON 1 Find stocks and keep them The search box, ticker suffixes, importing a company nobody has looked up yet, and the difference between the whiteboard and a stock list.
- LESSON 2 Work with a list Views are column sets. Pick one, build your own, sort, select, export, and give the table the room it needs.
- LESSON 3 Read a stock What each part of a company's page tells you: key fundamentals, the assessment, charts, profile, ownership and news.
- LESSON 4 Dig into a metric Find any metric by name, read its history, and see the exact calculation and the imported figures behind it.
- LESSON 5 Screen the market Build a screen: what to sort on, Must / Should / Exclude conditions, the universe, and free-text search over company descriptions.
- LESSON 6 Save, refine, backtest Keep a screen, improve it without losing the original, and measure how its rules would have done over past years.
- LESSON 7 Track your portfolio Record what you own, let Uncle Stock compute your return, and get an e-mail when a stock crosses your limit.
- LESSON 8 Coming from the classic client Where everything moved to, how to find a metric under the name you know, and what the classic client still does that this one does not.
4Two things worth knowing first
Start with lesson 8 instead. It is a where-did-it-go table, and it will save you the hunting. The Classic version link stays in the top right of every screen, and nothing is lost by switching: your lists, screens, column sets and hidden metrics are the same in both.
There is a video tour in the classic tutorial. It still shows the classic interface, so the buttons are in other places than the ones described here — the ideas carry over, the clicks do not.
